Durham, North Carolina Description For over 15 years, Caring House Inc. has provided a home-like atmosphere to more than 7,000 cancer patients and their caregivers as they receive outpatient treatment at the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center. Caring House is looking for a new Executive Director. The ideal candidate will share the Caring House vision of making a positive and measurable difference in the stays of our guests. She/he will be a catalyzing force between Caring House’s energetic staff and the hundreds of willing volunteers and funders in our community. Our Executive Director will embrace our mission and have a track record that demonstrates strong nonprofit leadership. Requirements We seek a service leader with exceptional communication skills and 3-5 years experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree required. Medical degree not required. Years of first-hand experience raising money and developing donor relations is a must. Candidates with strong events background welcomed. Career experience with a nonprofit organization is preferred. Position The Children’s House at Johns Hopkins

Our Mission
The mission of The Children's House at Johns Hopkins is to provide a family-centered, supportive residence for children receiving medical care at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. It is our purpose to keep families together in the midst of medical crisis, to reduce stress and to promote self-help and mutual support. The Children's House also serves as a center for educational, therapeutic and support groups within the community Description The Resident Manager is accountable for the evening and overnight management of the Children’s House, with the objective of providing a safe, warm and comfortable place for critically ill children and their families to stay during treatment. This will include responsibility for supervising the WM’s, schedule coverage for evenings, weekends and holidays, family care; and contributing to house policy and facility maintenance and upkeep.
Responsible to: VP/COO
I Resident Manager Duties include (but are not limited to):
A. Family Care -The Resident Director of Operations will support families by creating an atmosphere of warmth and understanding and will help promote self-advocacy for their needs.
1. Responsible for admission of families to the House after 4:00p.m., and together with the Family Care Manager, the selection of room assignments. In particularly sensitive situations will coordinate room assignments with them, as well.
2. Orients new residents to the House; explains policies/procedures to residents.
3. Respond to emergency calls during the night until 8am.
4. Promotes an atmosphere of “a home-away-from-home”.
5. Provides support and comfort to House residents.
6. Monitors resident behavior along with the Family Care Manager and has responsibility for compliance with policies/rules. Problems not addressed by House policy or which are not resolvable shall be brought to the Family Centered Care Coordinator at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and the VP/COO.
7. Keeps informed about families and their children’s medical situations, while respecting their privacy and always respecting their confidentiality.
8. Advocate for the residents’ needs with the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and with outside community organizations.
B. Supervisory/Administrative:
1. Responsible for supervision of Weekend Managers.
2. Together with the Lead Weekend Manager schedule and run WM meetings to provide information and direction for the WM staff.
3. Ensure schedule provides qualified coverage during evenings, weekends and holidays.
4. Supervise the evening volunteers – provide assistance and a presence during activities.
5. Establish and run a security and emergency preparedness program. Conduct and keep records of drills and actual emergencies.
6. Assist with creating and revising policies, manuals, handbooks, forms, and other written materials. Keep up to date on policy changes.
7. Monitor the House during desk time, periodically walking the floors to interact with families and ensure compliance with house rules.
8. Periodically walk the floors to perform housekeeping duties; empty trash, ensure floors are free of debris, toy room is straightened, kitchens are clean and common rooms are straightened.
9. If a family checks out after 5pm, check their rooms for cleanliness, refill linens and ensure it is prepared for the next family.
10. Along with Family Care Manager, accept referrals from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and other designated facilities and make room assignments in compliance with the priority admissions policy.
11. Complete Communication Log page for shift and update day staff upon their arrival.
12. Report housekeeping, maintenance and repair concerns to day staff.
13. Together with appropriate staff review suggestions from residents, committees, etc. and implement when feasible.
14. Identify and recommend issues needing attention.
Requirements Qualifications:
A. Education: College Degree required or commensurate experience. Courses in child care, property management, and training in psychology or social work is helpful.
B. Experience: Minimum five years work experience or comparable life experience, or additional education. Should be acquainted with hospital routines and the needs of people in stressful or crisis situations through work or personal exposure.
C. Skills/Traits: Good communication skills, empathetic, sensitive, and compassionate. Ability to exercise authority, yet flexible when situation demands. Strong coping and helping skills for assisting families in crisis. Comfortable with, and accepting of, persons for all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Strong management skills and ability to follow through on all job responsibilities.
D. Health: Must be in good general health with no history of chronic communicable diseases, which could be hazardous to the House residents. Family members living in the Children’s House would also have to be in good general health without history of chronic diseases, which could be hazardous to the House residents.
E. Living Arrangement: The Children’s House must be the Resident Manager’s primary residence.
F. Official Working Hours: Sunday, 5:00p.m.- 8:00 am, Monday through Thursday, 4:30p.m.-8:00 a.m. and Friday 8 – 10 am.
